Everyone talked about Hitler’s power to brainwash followers into doing atrocious things to innocent people.
Well, he did. But he’s dead, lost the war, was proven a lying tyrant, and will go down as one of the evilest rulers in history.
It sucked to be him.
Bob Dylan, on the other hand, is a Nobel Literature Prize winning songwriter, still alive, writes with an honest, authentic pen, and will go down as one of the modern classic artists in history.
I think the greatest quality of Dylan…
The thing which allows him to write what he does and have the appeal he had from day one was this paraphrase…
“He wrote what he did. If you liked it. Great. If you didn’t? He didn’t care, you don’t have to listen and it’s not going to change how he will write in the future.”
In short, he is authentic.
Hitler wasn’t authentic. He was just the opposite. He had ulterior motives.
Dylan was just writing what Dylan thought.
Hitler cared about what people thought. If he didn’t he wouldn’t have been the mean bass-turd he was.
Dylan cared about what Dylan thought. If you agreed, great, if not so what. Go get your own thoughts and be you then.
Maybe if Hitler would have had a bit more Dylan in him, we would have avoided a war, innocent people would have lived, people would be born today who never got a chance at life because their “would be” fathers and mothers were killed.
See how important authenticity is? It’s history changing.
You need to be authentic in your songwriting. Don’t have ulterior motives, they are transparent.
Don’t deceive people, it will be fund out.
Be you, and if no one seems to listen, work on your skills and techniques, but still be you.
Practically every time you imagine a situation and write about it, it will come across as a big fakeroo.
Write about your experiences.
At the very least, write about a movie scene which moved you because you can transfer a similar situation or feeling in your life, and the emotion winds up in the lyrics.
