I wanna think it was about 1983 or 84.
I’m driving the outskirts of our small town of 13,000 people.
Following this brown Pontiac Firebird. Looked very much the Jim Rockford car from the old show, The Rockford Files.
Cruising along maybe 45-MPH and all of the sudden this Sheriff’s car shows up in front of us. The Firebird tries braking and making a move, but I’m behind him in a one-ton Ford stake body truck.
The Firebird is on a 60-degree angle to me after considering an unsuccessful fast 180-turn around. Partially in my lane, partially hanging in the on-coming lane.
The sheriff skids in on an angle to block the lanes in front of the bird…
And I’m now half-way in both lanes trying to brake without hitting any of them, blocking the exit.
The Sheriff jumps out, pulls out his pistol, and aims it at the driver’s window with both hands.
I sat there wondering if I’m about to be in a shootout or what.
Thankfully, no shots were fired and no blood was shed, the person got out, and whatever they needed to do was done.
It occurred to me as soon as it was over…
That Sheriff used me.
He knew he’d better take advantage of my being the blocker truck so this dude didn’t pull a Smokey and the Bandit and go tearing off in high speed through town.
In one sense, I felt kind of honored to play a part in getting a bad guy.
They don’t road block you and stick a ‘bidniz’ end of a pistol in your window for running a light.
But, I also felt a bit used.
I was just there for the cop’s sake.
Not all that unlike I’ve felt a time or two at some songwriting workshops over the years.
There weren’t no guns whipped out or anything like that, but it seemed like my presence there was being used to help promote a songwriting educational event or give the speaker another set of ears to speak to.
And then, there were events where I’d not miss them for the world, because the presenter really cared we got what was being said. It wasn’t just about writing songs, it was about being a better songwriter, as a person.
That’s what my aim is with Tune Booster.
I’ve even made it dirt cheap, you really can’t lose. More at: https://www.tunesmithtips.com/tunebooster/
