Having spent a fair bit of time on the road over the years, there are some strange sightings.
A man sitting on a case of Budweiser in front of his car along the highway, while his female companion walks away arms flailing in disgust.
Or, a sheriff from the oncoming lane stopping a Trans Am in front of me…
Jumping out and aiming his pistol at the driver’s window while cautiously approaching the vehicle.
One time, a Texas Longhorn thought he’d take to the Beaumont highways for a little mid-lane stroll in rush hour.
Lately though there are signs saying…
Drive now, catch Pokémon later.
Huh?
I thought Pokémon was done in the 90s.
I had to look up what was going on.
Great, if texting while driving wasn’t bad enough, now we’ve got losers playing phone games while driving?
Maybe that explains all the semis driving right past those signs in full rumble strip mode.
Passing them, they’re in full prayer mode with heads bowed to the iPhone god.
Thing is, there is a point in songwriting where this is the same problem.
Granted, it’s not deadly like driving while playing with your Pokémon behind the wheel.
But it’s just as distractive.
With the driving thing?
There are too many things vying for your attention.
That’s why they don’t want you doing it you see.
They want you to drive, and only drive.
With songwriting, there can be too many voices vying for your attention.
When writing, you write, and only write.
Even so, there are writing voices which you need to duct tape their mouth and kick them in the back pockets for a time.
You’ll let it speak, when you damned well say it can.
If you don’t? Even though it is a writing voice, it does something to screw up your writing.
